How to get a data scientist job as a fresher

Data scientists use statistics and machine learning to answer questions and make predictions. Knowing the theory isn't enough — interviewers want to see analytical thinking and projects you can explain end to end.

What a Data Scientist does

  • Explores and cleans data to understand what's really in it.
  • Builds and evaluates statistical and machine learning models.
  • Designs experiments and measures the impact of changes.
  • Communicates results to technical and non-technical teams.

Projects that prove your skills

  1. 1An end-to-end prediction project: question, cleaning, features, model, evaluation and a short write-up of what you'd do next.
  2. 2An exploratory analysis of a public dataset with clear, well-labelled charts and conclusions.
  3. 3A simple A/B test analysis explaining significance and practical impact.

Data Scientist skills

What employers look for in a fresher

  • Python (pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn)

The standard toolkit for analysis and modelling.

  • SQL

Most real data lives in databases.

  • Statistics and probability

Hypothesis testing, distributions and sampling are core interview topics.

  • Machine learning fundamentals

Regression, classification, overfitting and model evaluation.

  • Data visualisation

Charts that make a finding obvious.

  • Problem framing

Turning a vague business question into an analysis plan.

What the interviews look like

  1. Round 1Online test: statistics, Python and SQL questions, sometimes a short case.
  2. Round 2Technical interview: ML concepts, a project deep dive and a live coding or SQL exercise.
  3. Round 3Case or managerial round: how you'd approach a business problem with data.

Questions to practise

  • What is the bias–variance trade-off?
  • How would you handle an imbalanced classification dataset?
  • Explain precision, recall and when you'd prioritise each.
  • What is a p-value, in plain language?
  • How do you prevent data leakage when training a model?
  • Walk me through your best project and what you'd improve.

Paid plans include preparation for each interview opportunity. How interview preparation works

FAQ

Data Scientist: common questions

Straight answers for freshers starting out.

Can freshers get data scientist jobs?

Yes, though competition is high. Strong statistics fundamentals, SQL and one or two well-explained end-to-end projects matter most.

Do I need a master's degree for data science?

Not necessarily. Many employers hire graduates who can demonstrate the skills through projects and interviews.

Should I learn deep learning first?

Start with statistics, SQL and classic machine learning. Deep learning is valuable but builds on those foundations.
