How to get a DevOps engineer job as a fresher

DevOps engineers keep software building, deploying and running reliably. Freshers break in by showing they understand how the pieces fit together — not just individual tools — through hands-on pipeline and deployment projects.

What a DevOps Engineer does

  • Builds and maintains CI/CD pipelines that test and deploy code automatically.
  • Packages applications in containers and runs them on servers or Kubernetes.
  • Manages cloud infrastructure, often as code.
  • Monitors systems, responds to incidents and automates repetitive work.

Projects that prove your skills

  1. 1Containerise a web app with Docker and deploy it to a cloud VM with a reverse proxy and HTTPS.
  2. 2Build a CI/CD pipeline that runs tests and deploys automatically on every push.
  3. 3Provision infrastructure with Terraform and document how to recreate it from scratch.

DevOps Engineer skills

What employers look for in a fresher

  • Linux and shell scripting

Most servers run Linux; you'll live in the terminal.

  • Git

Pipelines are triggered by and built around version control.

  • Docker

Containers are the standard way to package and ship applications.

  • CI/CD (GitHub Actions, Jenkins or GitLab CI)

Automating build, test and deploy is the core of the role.

  • A cloud platform (AWS, Azure or GCP)

Compute, storage, networking and IAM basics are expected.

  • Networking basics

DNS, ports, load balancers and HTTPS come up in interviews and incidents.

What the interviews look like

  1. Round 1Online test: Linux, networking and scripting questions, sometimes a small hands-on task.
  2. Round 2Technical interview: Docker, CI/CD, cloud basics and troubleshooting scenarios.
  3. Round 3HR round.

Questions to practise

  • What is the difference between a Docker image and a container?
  • How would you find which process is using port 8080 on Linux?
  • Walk me through the stages of a CI/CD pipeline you've built.
  • A deployment succeeded but the site is down — how do you troubleshoot?
  • What is the difference between a VM and a container?
  • How does DNS resolution work?

FAQ

DevOps Engineer: common questions

Straight answers for freshers starting out.

Can a fresher become a DevOps engineer?

Yes, though many start in support, cloud or junior DevOps roles. Hands-on projects with Docker, CI/CD and a cloud platform make the biggest difference.

Do I need coding for DevOps?

You need scripting (Bash or Python) and enough programming knowledge to understand the applications you deploy, but not deep software design.

Which cloud should I learn first?

AWS appears in the most listings, but the concepts transfer — pick one and learn compute, storage, networking and IAM well.
