How to get a full stack developer job as a fresher

Full stack roles are among the most common entry points into software development. Employers want freshers who can build a small feature end to end — interface, API and database — and explain the decisions they made.

What a Full Stack Developer does

  • Builds user-facing screens and the APIs behind them.
  • Designs database tables and writes queries for new features.
  • Fixes bugs across the front end and back end, and writes tests.
  • Works with designers, testers and senior developers through code reviews.

Projects that prove your skills

  1. 1A task or expense tracker with sign-up, login, CRUD screens and a real database — deployed with a public link.
  2. 2A small e-commerce flow: product list, cart, order history and an admin page.
  3. 3A REST API with validation, pagination and error handling, documented in the README.

What employers look for in a fresher

  • JavaScript / TypeScript

The language of the browser and, with Node.js, often the server too.

  • React (or another front-end framework)

Most fresher full stack listings ask for a component-based framework.

  • Node.js / Express or Java / Spring Boot

Building REST APIs is the core back-end task.

  • SQL and one database (MySQL / PostgreSQL / MongoDB)

Every feature stores and reads data.

  • Git and GitHub

Teams expect you to branch, commit and open pull requests confidently.

  • HTTP and REST basics

Status codes, request/response flow and authentication come up in almost every interview.

What the interviews look like

  1. Round 1Online assessment: aptitude plus 1–3 coding problems (arrays, strings, hashing).
  2. Round 2Technical interview: JavaScript fundamentals, React concepts, SQL queries and a deep dive into one of your projects.
  3. Round 3HR round: introduction, motivation, relocation and salary expectations.

Questions to practise

  • What is the difference between let, const and var?
  • Explain the React component lifecycle and when useEffect runs.
  • How does a browser request reach your API and come back?
  • Write a SQL query to find the second-highest salary in a table.
  • How did you handle authentication in your project?
  • What happens when two users update the same record at the same time?

FAQ

Full Stack Developer: common questions

Straight answers for freshers starting out.

Is full stack development good for freshers?

Yes. Many companies hire freshers into full stack or web developer roles, and one well-built project can demonstrate both front-end and back-end skills.

MERN or Java full stack — which should I learn?

Pick the one that matches the job listings in the cities you're targeting and the projects you've already built. Depth in one stack beats a shallow mix of both.

Do I need DSA for full stack roles?

Most companies test basic data structures and problem solving in the first round, so practise arrays, strings, hashing and simple recursion alongside your projects.
