Software developer roles are among the most applied-for fresher jobs in India, so a generic approach rarely works. Candidates who get hired usually have a clear target stack, visible proof of their skills, and a steady, tracked application routine.
1. Choose a stack to focus on
Look at 30–40 fresher developer listings in the cities you're open to and note which skills appear most. That tells you what employers near you actually hire for. Common entry-level paths include:
| Path | Core skills employers ask for |
|---|---|
| Java backend | Core Java, OOP, Spring Boot, SQL, REST APIs |
| Full stack (JavaScript) | JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Node.js, SQL or MongoDB |
| Python backend | Python, Django or FastAPI, SQL, REST APIs |
| .NET | C#, ASP.NET Core, SQL Server |
| Mobile | Kotlin (Android) or Flutter/React Native |
Whatever the stack, Git, SQL, basic data structures and how the web works (HTTP, APIs) are expected.
2. Build projects that act as proof
- Two or three projects in your chosen stack, each solving a real problem — a booking system, an expense tracker, an inventory app.
- Include the things real apps have: authentication, a database, validation, error handling.
- Deploy them so anyone can click a link, and write a README covering what it does, the tech used and how to run it.
- Be ready to explain every design decision. Interviewers often spend 15–20 minutes on one project.
If you followed a tutorial, extend it with features of your own and say so honestly. Interviewers spot copied projects quickly.
3. Where fresher developer jobs are posted
- Company career pages — many companies post fresher and graduate roles only there.
- Job portals and LinkedIn, filtered for 0–1 years of experience and your stack.
- Off-campus drives and hiring challenges run by larger IT companies.
- Referrals from seniors, alumni and people you've met at meetups or hackathons.
- Placement programs that verify your profile and connect you with hiring employers.
Get a verified developer profile and matched interview opportunities instead of applying blindly.

- Online assessment or coding round: arrays, strings, hashing, sorting, recursion and simple SQL queries. Practise solving problems in your interview language, not just reading solutions.
- Technical interview: language fundamentals (OOP, collections, exceptions), DBMS basics, and a walk-through of your project.
- HR round: introduction, motivation, relocation, shifts and salary expectations.
5. Track and adjust every two weeks
Keep a simple sheet of applications, responses and interviews. No responses means the resume or targeting needs work. Coding rounds failing means more practice. Failing at the project discussion means you need to understand your own project more deeply. Fix the stage that's breaking, not everything at once.
